Lessons at Work

The classroom elements described in the Artful Learning Model occur within ongoing school initiatives. The model works with participating schools to address:

  • Developing a clear mission,
  • Aligning curriculum standards, appropriate instructional strategies and authentic and frequent assessment
  • Encouraging community and family involvement
  • Developing a culture of shared leadership and
  • Promoting a climate of continuous improvement.
The Model is not highly prescriptive and emphasizes well researched educational practices which are flexible and may be woven into a coherent plan for school improvement. Professionals are expected to bring their own strengths into everyday practice and to be continually learning as they experience the four key components of the model. Reflecting on practice through action research requires teachers to use the lens of the artist, become mentors to each other and use the discipline of a scholar.
